America’s Got Talent review: Gingzilla, Sophie Pecora’s ‘Seventh Grade’

AGTTonight, it has finally arrived — the premiere of the latest America’s Got Talent season! This is exciting, and it also certainly represents an opportunity to see the latest and (hopefully) greatest stuff that is out there.

As we often are, consider us your humble guide through all things America’s Got Talent — we’re going to be offering up takes on all of the different acts over the course of this episode, so be sure to keep refreshing throughout for some more insight!

Before we even talk about the show itself, remember that there are a couple of clear changes this year — Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough are the new judges this year, and they are joining Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, and new host Terry Crews.

Greg Morton – Our first audition tonight comes via a guy who do a wide array of different impressions and basically reenacted Star Wars in a very short period of time. It was legitimately fun! We don’t know if it’s change-the-world funny, but we do think his attitude and his spirit should set the tone for a great rest of the season.

Eric Chien – This was incredibly good, especially for a guy who claimed that he’s only recently been performing magic and didn’t want to say if he was better than Shin Lim. What he did shoe is that he has a real ability to make amazing things happen, though his stage presence is somewhat of a work in progress.

Sophie Pecora – She had a chance to come on TV and do an original song, which is a crazy chance to do something big for your career. It’s a showcase of real talent, something that can make you be a force to be reckoned with for some time. While her song “Seventh Grade” was disjointed, make no mistake — it was powerful.

V.Unbeatable – This is a group that was first teased online leading up to the premiere, and we had a good feeling as to what to expect — they are incredibly athletic, skilled, and can do thinks that very few others can ever hope to. This is a group that could go places this season, rest assured.

Jackie Fabulous – This was another act that was teased before the show and as a comic, she certainly lived up to her name! This was a wonderful performance, mostly in how she was really able to be relatable and high-energy and win the crowd over in a very short period of time.

Gingzilla – This was something. We didn’t expect a seven-foot drag performer to come out and nail “She’s a Lady” with this sort of power. This was spectacular — Ging is going places. We love what they did and also how they totally owned the character with humor and style.

The Human Fuse – This was exciting, and we also kind of loved the fact that this guy was an older daredevil who really seemed nonplussed about the idea of continuing to do this. Nonetheless, he prepared for ignition once more here. This was thrilling, dangerous, and exciting — basically, exactly what you would expect from a danger act like this.
