Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight? Upcoming schedule

John Oliver

Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight on HBO? Well, let’s just go ahead and call tonight a little bit of a scheduling oddity. Why is that? Think along the lines of it being the day before Memorial Day. This weekend is a tough one — a really tough one. This is where most people are out having barbecue or spending time with loved ones. We wouldn’t exactly call this a banner week for television.

With all of this in mind, there is (alas) no new episode of Last Week Tonight on this week. (Also, remember this — the series is coming off of airing after multiple episodes of Game of Thrones. That’s the sort of thing that really was valuable and the show took advantage of it for as long as humanly possible.) This is a break tonight, but here is the good news: It’s a temporary break. Last Week Tonight will return next week for another new episode, one where he can take a little bit of a larger look at some of the stories of the week and beyond.

Why does Oliver’s show take breaks? If you didn’t know the answer to this question already, it’s something we happily take on in the video below! After you do this, remember to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more — we’ll have more updates coming that you don’t want to miss.

So what does Oliver need to address next? It’s hard to really speculate too much on the subject at the moment, given that so much of this show is about immediacy. Yet, you can make the case that this would be a great time to focus more on the 2020 race and the candidates. We do get a sense on some of these pop-culture institution shows, whether it be this one or Saturday Night Live, that there is a slight hesitancy to really dive into the subject of what’s happening with the Democratic field. Why could that be? Well, there may be a number of different reasons for it, but we think the primary one could just be simply a matter of focus — i.e. finding the right focus.

On a bit of a larger scale, there is one other thing we hope Oliver does implement more of in the future: On-location interviews with interesting, influential people. Look at what he did with Anita Hill, or the conversation he had with Edward Snowden. These two generated interesting discussions and we got a chance to hear something from them that we don’t have a chance to on some other shows.
