Animal Kingdom season 4 spoilers: Emily Dechanel teases Angela

Emily Deschanel

Sure, there are a number of reasons to be excited when it comes to Animal Kingdom season 4, but Emily Deschanel is near the top of the list! Save for Drunk History, this is her first major acting gig since the end of Bones, and she finds herself playing a very different sort of character in Angela. She’s a hustler and a fighter, someone who does what she needs to in order to survive. She’s got a longtime history with them thanks to Julia, and she absolutely has some strong opinions about Smurf.

Yet, moving into the start of season 4, Angela’s going to be someone who relies on the Codys in some way — even if she’s just relying on them in order to take advantage of them down the road. Here is some of what she had to say to TVLine:

She needs them. She wants to be part of the family. Julia didn’t want anything to do with her mother. Angela feels that way, too, but she also sees an opportunity. So she has mixed feelings. She grew up with these guys and knows them. And since she has a dark side, she understands and can relate to them.

Angela feels ultimately like one of those characters who we’re going to get a chance to get to know a little bit more over time, and whose book isn’t going to be entirely written in the early going. There are probably a number of different secrets and surprises that we’re going to find out about in relation to her, and one of the most interesting parts of the upcoming season will probably be just finding out what some of those things are. It’s going to take some time; after all, Angela isn’t devised to be some sort of one-and-done character. In our mind we like to compare her to Denis Leary’s character of Billy, someone who was around for most of the season and found a way to constantly stir the pot and mix things up a little bit.

In the end, the best thing we can hope for with Angela is that she challenges some of the Cody Boys, and maybe has some of them thinking differently. The more conflict that you can cause between these guys, the better off the season as a while is going to be. We already know that we’re getting it between J and Smurf.
