Animal Kingdom season 4 promo: Smurf, Angela, and J’s promise

Animal Kingdom season 3

In just one week’s time, the Animal Kingdom season 4 premiere will arrive — and we think the fireworks will be coming up soon after.

Based on all early indications, this season’s going to be crazy — think high-octane, intense, death-defying, and every other crazy adjective you could possibly hope for. This is going to mark an opportunity to see the next phase of what’s been a long-simmering cold war with J on one side and Smurf on the other.

From one vantage point, they’re family! You remember that and, of course, you want to believe that everything will be okay and that there’s no real chaos. But, this is Animal Kingdom and you gotta believe because of that there WILL be chaos. It’s impossible to avoid it when you’ve got this many people who are all doing what they can in order to properly feast on money, power, and just about everything in between. We’re going to see characters intent on doing what they can to score more cash, including freezing some other people out. For J, we think that this is where most of his own motivation is at the moment. He wants nothing more than to ensure that he doesn’t have to cut in Smurf — that way, people don’t need her. They need him instead.

The latest promo below also gives you a small taste of Emily Deschanel’s Angela, a character who will be very much important to this story — though the exact parameters of it remain to be seen. We know that she’s got a checkered past and has a history with this family … but it’s probably a different sort of history than we saw from Billy last season. We do think that there’s a certainly tendency with the Animal Kingdom arc at this point — person shows up with ties to the family, wrecks stuff, and then goes on their merry way. We don’t foresee that formula being necessarily broken this season; it’s what Angela does in the meantime that matters, and that is precisely what we’re curious to check out. These seasons have a tendency to blow by, so we’re just going to have to milk the series for every single second that we can along the way.

At the end of this promo, J makes a promise — or maybe you consider it more of a warning. Either way, it’s pretty darn ominous.
