Whiskey Cavalier season 2 revival may still be possible at ABC!
Earlier today, we reported that the ratings for the show’s season 1 finale surged to its highest number since the second episode of the season. What’s the big reason for that? We view it as being more or less threefold — the product of a passionate fan campaign, interest in how the season could end, and also a strong lead-in courtesy of ABC’s live comedy revivals of All in the Family and The Jeffersons. It’s possible that there were considerations for ABC reviving the show before this, but there’s now more smoke around the idea than before.
Per a report from TVLine, there are talks between ABC and studio Warner Bros. TV about pulling a Timeless and un-canceling the show, but it’s far from a done deal. As of right now, the publication’s insiders put it around 50-50. With these reports leaking out there, we’d put it closer to 55-45, but that’s just because this could lead to more hope and enthusiasm form the show’s devoted audience.
While all of this news is absolutely great — as is the idea of Whiskey Cavalier coming back at midseason for the 2019-20 season — there’s still another question to think about. How do you work to actually ensure that the series performs just as well, if not better, in season 2? We obviously want it to, but we knew that ABC’s original cancellation stemmed from concerns over how they would be able to grow the audience. Our feeling is that one of the best ways to do that is by finding a way to potentially pair it with another show with either a similar tone and style. Also, we hope that there are some ways for viewers to conveniently stream it and find the first season over the course of the summer/fall.

What Whiskey Cavalier has going for it at this point is fundamentally similar — fantastic chemistry with its cast, the right balance of action and comedy, and mainstream appeal, if the mainstream were to properly find it. Tonally it reminds us of two of our other favorite shows from the past couple of decades in White Collar and Chuck, and the fact that it’s been able to accrue the following that it has over the past couple of weeks really speaks to where things are at the moment.

Keep fighting, and keep discussing the series online. Clearly, all of the movement and activity already is starting to shift ABC’s thinking. It’s mostly a measure now of seeing if these shifts eventually lead to something greater.
