Outlander season 5 filming updates: Back into the night
In a new post on Instagram, Caitriona Balfe made it clear that she’s been filming as of late overnight — which obviously means fewer opportunities for sightings, but also probably more coffee, tea, or whatever else this cast and crew use in order to keep themselves awake. This is the second confirmed stretch of night shoots we’ve seen in the past month and a half of filming — there could be more, but not all information about filming comes out there.
As for why this really matters within the context, the simple reason is this — in the world of Outlander, there are very few good things that happen outside after dark. We’re sure that there are plenty of nighttime scenes set indoors, but for those, the cast doesn’t really need to be up late filming. They can replace darkness and such on their various indoor sets and soundstages. When you’re out in nature, however, you need to be out in nature — and there could be bad stuff going down. This is when characters are either up to no good, or when characters are trying to protect themselves from other people up to no good.
Within the early days of season 5, there are some characters who should be worried about things that go bump in the night. Take, for example, Murtagh, who basically has a target on his head. If the British are able to find him and the rest of the Regulators, it makes sense to strike at night when nobody knows that they’re coming. Meanwhile, Jamie and Claire themselves could be in some trouble if they make their allegiance to the Regulators public — we don’t think they’d want to do that so early in season 5, but they may not have a choice. There are some other threats and things to be worried about here, as well, whether it be new arrivals around Fraser’s Ridge, troublesome wildlife, or even a local tribe if they have the wrong assumption about the Frasers. (We know that Jamie and Claire wouldn’t intentionally do anything to harm them, but there are probably some Native Americans who are a little less trusting of European settlers than some of the ones we’ve seen so far — perhaps even more so than the Mohawk were.)
Given that Outlander season 5 won’t premiere most likely until 2020, we’ll be waiting for a bit to see the Mohawk and some other characters in action.
