MacGyver season 4, Criminal Minds season 15 held to midseason
One of the most surprising bits of news to come out from CBS’ pre-upfront discussion this morning came via what was not on the fall schedule, rather than what was on it.
Let’s start here with MacGyver. The Lucas Till drama was conspicuously absent from the schedule after airing on Friday nights at 8:00 p.m. for the past couple of seasons. Now, Hawaii Five-0 is being moved to Fridays at 8:00 while Magnum PI is going to be taking over the spot at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. It does make sense to pair these two shows together, given that they do both film in Hawaii and this could give them a chance to do a couple more connected storylines/crossovers here and there.
As for MacGyver, though, we wouldn’t read too much into the midseason start date just yet as a sign of trouble — The Blacklist premiered at midseason this year and managed to get itself a season 7 renewal. CBS has shown a commitment to keeping long-running shows around at least until a final season is announced, and there was no announcement of a final season today.
(We’re hoping to have a few more specifics in terms of MacGyver’s fourth season and some of the details a little bit later, so stay tuned. We also have our fall-schedule video below; subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube on the other side of watching it.)
As for Criminal Minds…
The news of it being held to midseason is mostly a surprise since it actually just finished filming its final season a matter of days ago. We really did think there was even a chance that the show could return and air out its final episodes this summer! There’s fundamentally no reason for them to wait around as long as they are on some of these episodes, unless of course, they are really interested in just drawing the wait out as long as humanly possible.
You know already that the final season of Criminal Minds is set to be 10 episodes, and the craziest thing here is that in the event that they do wait to premiere this show until March, you could have to wait more or less a full year from when the last season to when the current one begins. Consider this to be one of the biggest tests of patience out there. Luckily, we do know that there is a lot of worthwhile stuff coming up over the course of this final season, including an epic Big Bad in Everett Lynch in addition to tying together the cliffhanger that we had with Reid and JJ from this past finale. What’s going to happen with the two of them now? Consider that something worth thinking about for a while.
