Following the big reveal earlier today that ABC has given a green light to TWO more seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, we’re also going to be seeing these other Shondaland – TGIT shows back for another run. When it comes to Station 19, nothing is really a surprise — its ratings were steady for most of the year and given that it is in the same world as Grey’s Anatomy, there’s no reason to think that it will be going anywhere in the near future. Not only that, but Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff has been promoted to that new position over here, as well. What that means is that there are going to be more opportunities for her to connect the two shows and the universe beyond what we’ve seen so far.
(If you didn’t know, next week’s Station 19 will be the last for Stacy McKee, who has been with the show from the very beginning, as showrunner.)
As for the renewal of How to Get Away with Murder, we’ve been a little more concerned given that the ratings for season 5 were down by a wide margin over season 4, and it no longer is getting the same awards recognition for star Viola Davis that it once did. Yet, it does perform reasonably well in DVR viewing/streaming and we think that with its star power with Davis as lead, ABC would like to end it on the best possible note.
We should note that there is a rumor floating around that the upcoming season of How to Get Away with Murder will be its last, buta t the moment, this is not a rumor that we can 100% corroborate. We wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be true, given that this is a show that has had a good run and with the nature of its story, it’s hard to really see it lasting forever.
For some more news on renewals/cancellations throughout the day, we recommend checking out our guide! With these renewals officially coming in, we’re in a spot now where The Rookie is one of the biggest bubble shows remaining on ABC … and it’s one that they could struggle to make a firm decision on. The Fix, which is currently airing over on Monday nights, is likely to be canceled.
