There’s some great news coming in right now when it comes to Grey’s Anatomy — even greater than we expected, in fact!
Today, it was confirmed that not only was the long-running medical drama renewed for another season, but that it’s getting another season beyond that. Basically, what that means is that you’re going to be seeing the Ellen Pompeo series around on the air until we get to 2021, which definitely helps to give the show some added stability. That is one of the reasons why we probably waited so long to get this renewal news; negotiations were a little more intense than anyone first thought.
Meanwhile, there’s also this that is worth noting — Pompeo has officially extended her previously-signed two-year deal, meaning that she is also officially on the show through the end of season 17. At this point next year, maybe she will assess her future on the series again. This is a show that probably will last however long that she wants it to, mostly because it’s hard to imagine it going on without her. At the moment, we put Grey’s Anatomy in the same position as Law & Order: SVU, which are very dependent at this point in their run in the lead sticking around. If that happens, they can continue to move forward.

While the ratings for Grey’s Anatomy are not anywhere close to what they were during the show’s heyday, we don’t know how you can say that the series is anything other than an enormous success story even still. It not only remains ABC’s most-popular drama series week in and week out, but it’s one of the most-watched shows on Netflix in terms of minutes watched and has an enormous international following. It’s also become a generational show where people who watched it in the early years as teenagers can now probably watch it with some of their own kids — or at least it’s starting to get to that point. Its legacy is that of the biggest medical drama, at least in terms of episodes in the history of television.
The news about this renewal comes out right before the finale for the ABC series is set to air on Thursday night — want more news about that? Then all you’ve gotta do is head over to the link here.
