Bodyguard’s Richard Madden may land Marvel role; season 2 implications

Bodyguard episode 2

For everyone curious about the future of a possible Bodyguard season 2, just about every story out there matters. That includes some of what we’re here to discuss at this particular moment.

According to a report coming in now via Variety, Madden is in talks to appear in the upcoming Marvel movie The Eternals, a film that already has on board some big names including Silicon Valley actor Kumail Nanjiani and also Angelina Jolie. Apparently, Richard’s role is going to be that of Ikaris, a member of the aforementioned Eternals. This is one of the ways in which Marvel seems to be moving forward with their larger Cinematic Universe following the events of Avengers: Endgame, otherwise known as the superhero spectacle to end all superhero spectacles.

We’re not a movie site, so instead of spending too much time honing in on specifically this, let’s instead raise a different question here: What this could mean in terms of a possible Bodyguard season 2.

Let’s of course kick things off with this: While it’s easy to assume that Bodyguard already has a second season because of the overwhelming success of the first season, nothing is official as of yet. Scheduling is one of the issues there, as well as making sure there is a great story — creator Jed Mercurio is one of the best in the business, but the man needs time in order to craft some truly great stuff! Our hope still remains that we’ll get a chance to see a season 2 at some point next year — it’s almost sure to be renewed, so it’s really just a matter of time.

While Madden (also known for Game of Thrones) getting a prominent movie role may seem on the surface to be a not-great thing, there is another major component to this worth thinking about — the fact that sometimes, getting more publicity for an actor can mean more great things for a show. Richard landing a big-time movie role may eventually mean that a season 2 of Bodyguard will have more press, and in terms, even bigger ratings. The bar has already been set high there, given that the first season of the show is one of the most successful in the past decade on BBC One. We like to think that it was successful on Netflix, but as noted, it’s not like the streaming service has been altogether eager to share a whole lot of numbers publicly (they rarely do).

Ultimately, with the latest season of his other show in Line of Duty done, we hope that Mercurio has more time to work on Bodyguard. (Also, if you haven’t watched Line of Duty before, we recommend watching it — it’s pretty darn tremendous.)
