Shailene Woodley’s ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’ to end

Is “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” done for good? It at least seems as though it will be following the end of its upcoming fifth season.

According to a brand-new report from Deadline, the long-running ABC Family drama, which has helped in part to turn Shailene Woodley (also of “The Descendants”) into a coveted actress for motion pictures, is going to end after its fifth season. This may seem like a short time for a show to air, but it is actually pretty long by the standards of this network. When you consider that ABC Family has a younger mean audience that most other “adult” networks, it also runs the risk of viewers outgrowing its programming more so than many other things on television. “Greek” only ran for four seasons on the network, “Make It or Break It” ended after three, and there is all sorts of speculation that “Pretty Little Liars” will also end after the upcoming fourth season.

Overall, everyone involved has to be involved with the show’s run. It not only tackled the subject of teen pregnancy before “Glee” did, but it also addressed a number of other interesting issues that many teenagers commonly go through on a regular basis. Let’s hope that regardless of how the show ends, it does so in a way that will satisfy longtime fans of the show. Let’s also hope that it ends before it really should, as “Make It or Break It” ended just before the arrival of the Olympics.
