Saturday Night Live cold open: Game of Thrones, Avengers’ Family Feud

SNL

Tonight, Saturday Night Live had some interesting options in regards to their cold open, mostly because they had a gifted host in Adam Sandler. Yet, it’s not all that often that we actually see hosts utilized in a cold open. It’s usually political, but the presence of Donald Trump has faded slightly over the past several weeks.

So what did Saturday Night Live decide to do tonight? They basically did a regular sketch — a new version of Celebrity Family Feud featuring Game of Thrones facing off against the Avengers. Really, this was just an excuse for everyone to do a bunch of different impressions. The best one was, clearly, Kate McKinnon as Brienne of Tarth. Also, Kenan Thompson had a great line in saying that he turns into a poop emoji when he turns off the suit.

The problem with doing this as a cold open is that really, there’s no way that this is going to get the same sort of attention as a political sketch. We do wonder whether or not this was a sign that we weren’t going to get too much in the way of politics tonight as a whole. This was fun enough, but it wasn’t altogether stellar. We don’t think anyone is going to really remember this amidst anything else that we’ve seen over the years from this sketch. In some ways, it felt like the costumes were actually more elaborate than any of the comedy itself. The best cameo was seeing Arya Stark come out at the end to save the day, but the joke that we got at the end of it wasn’t actually all that great.

Sometimes, a concept is a little bit better in the writers’ room than it is on the show, and this may be a fine example of that very thing.
