NCIS season 16 filming starting to wrap up; Wilmer Valderrama returning

Wilmer Valderrama

There are a couple of big stories worth reporting on today within the wonderful world of NCISand they start with great news for one Wilmer Valderrama. Why is that? We can now say that he is coming back for season 17!

In a new post on Instagram (which we have for you to check out below), the man behind the charismatic character of Nick Torres confirmed that he is done filming on the crime procedural for this season. That doesn’t mean that every other cast member is done (often, cast members wrap filming on somewhat of a scale), but we’re hoping that there will be a little more news on that front VERY soon! Wrapping up production is a cause for celebration, a lot of tasty food, and probably a long nap. Working on NCIS can be a rewarding job (both in terms of your career and your pocketbook), but it’s also an exhausting job. Think in terms of long hours and a season of filming that runs from July all the way until May. You get a break, sure, but it’s not a long one!

The most important news out of this is just knowing that Valderrama will be coming back for another season. At the moment, it feels like a number of other cast members are following suit! We know that Mark Harmon’s got a contract to be back; meanwhile, Maria Bello originally inked a three-season deal when she came on board. There was talk about Sean Murray’s own future leading into Tuesday’s new episode, but it turns out “looking at another job” was really just a stunt so that he could work on a case and it looks like he will be coming back.

Filming on season 17 will begin later this summer, but we still have three more episodes to go until that point. That includes the “…And Executioner” that will dive further into this mysterious bank account that seems to be funding hitmen to take out people that some how evade justice from the courts and then also the upcoming finale “Daughters,” one that should be an important story for Gibbs and Fornell. It’s one that will trace all the way back deep into the past of Harmon’s character, and also make him somewhat question the notion of vigilante justice. That’s something that, fittingly, is also going to be a part of Tuesday’s episode.

Congrats to Wilmer on a great season 16! He had some especially-powerful scenes this year and the Bishop/Torres ‘ship has been sailing further than ever before. We’ll see what lies ahead in season 17.
