New Amsterdam episode 21 preview: The last before finale

As we enter New Amsterdam episode 21 next week, you have to start bracing yourself for what will soon end up being the end of the road. The finale is coming up on May 14 and that will, at least hopefully, deliver a good sense as to where Max Goodwin is in his life, and then also the overall future of New Amsterdam as an institution. We’re hoping for an opportunity to see some hope for all futures, but not without a little more struggle. The never-give-up spirit of New Amsterdam is a big part of what makes it so great. These are characters who fight for everything that they have, and that’s where it gets some of its inspirational DNA.

We don’t want to just start speaking about the overall themes of this season, though, largely because episode 21 has a good bit of individual story to offer in its own right. For Max, that means continuing to fight for patients who have no one else to fight for him — those without insurance, otherwise known as those who have their lives sometimes ruined just because they’re trying to find a way to keep breathing.

For some more news all about what’s coming on New Amsterdam episode 21, be sure to check out the official synopsis below:

05/07/2019 (10:00PM – 11:00PM) (Tuesday) : Max (Ryan Eggold) goes head to head with hospital administration when he comes up with a new plan for patients without insurance. Meanwhile, Iggy (Tyler Labine) struggles with an accusation brought against him and Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) navigates her role as Deputy Medical Director. Also starring Janet Montgomery as Lauren Bloom, Anupam Kher as Vijay Kapoor and Jocko Sims as Floyd Reynolds. Guest starring Margot Bingham as Evie Garrison and Nana Mensah as Dr. Candelario TV-14 D, L, S

Within this episode, there’s a lot clearly that some of these characters are going to have to battle through. With Max, it’s going to be taking care of those vastly in need. With Iggy, it’s going to be taking care of something that he never saw coming — and also understanding the how and why of it being brought up. For Sharpe, it means working to navigate some new responsibilities and better understanding precisely what some of those actually mean. This is something that we’ll probably be exploring still moving into season 2, but this episode (fittingly titled “This is Not the End”) could serve as a rather healthy foundation. Some of the stories within this episode may be somewhat expected within the medical-drama world, but it’s the tone and the emotional connections that could help to make this series stand out.
