It’s weird to be approaching May, and still not hearing much in the way of news on Hawaii Five-0 season 10 one way or another. As a matter of fact, it’s downright unusual. Typically, CBS releases a blanket renewal for many of their shows, and they often announce it long before this point.
Yet, CBS has done things a little bit differently this time around. They announced renewals for NCIS and Blue Bloods, separate from some other shows, and NCIS: Los Angeles / NCIS: New Orleans got their own separate announcement. Many of their new shows, including Hawaii Five-0 sister series Magnum PI, were ordered for more episodes a little bit earlier this year.
So why the long wait for more news on a Hawaii Five-0 season 10? What is CBS waiting for? We don’t see this waiting game as intentional; we don’t envision CBS executives sitting on news that people would want to hear and cackling as they watch their viewers worry. An official deal may just not be done just yet. There are a number of different reasons why there could be some snags holding up an announcement, but most likely it’s just negotiating all of the different business ins and outs that need to get done. Renewals are often more challenging once a show gets deeper in its run; you have more financial stuff to think about, in addition to the juggling what is with this show a rather large cast.
The most important thing to note while you continue to go through this waiting period, is that Hawaii Five-0 almost certainly isn’t going anywhere. There’s no reason for CBS to cancel it and we have all the confidence in the world that a season 10 will be coming. While its live ratings are down versus season 8, it’s also in a more competitive timeslot this year and it’s also still performing better both in the 18-49 demographic and total viewers than the vast majority of Friday shows. Hawaii Five-0 has helped to give its network something that the majority of the competition envies — a consistent hit on Friday night that does well no matter the circumstance. With this show, Blue Bloods, and MacGyver (which we also think is going to be back for another season), this is a network with a consistent stable of shows on Friday that attracts viewers and still has the potential to bring in more.
