‘How I Met Your Mother’ review: Barney, Marshall, and Lily’s nanny quest

When we first heard that Monday night’s new episode of “How I Met Your Mother” was going to be entitled “Nannies,” we assumed that almost the entire story was going to be all about Marshall and Lily. However, it also turned out that Barney also found a way to enter the mix.

Really, the primary plot for this episode was rather simple: our married couple were desperate to find a person who was qualified for the position of nanny, and interviewed all sorts of people who were reasonably qualified for the job. The problem? Some wanted too much money, some were just quite frankly creepy, and no one really seemed to be completely up for the challenge save for one person: a woman who had connections to Marshall back in Minnesota. The problem? Barney, who was on a binge trying to pick up women off the nanny website, ended up trying to get into bed with her, and she did not want to work for anyone who was friends with him.

Of course, you knew that this story was going to end in a pretty predictable manner, as we found out that really the best nanny for young Marvin Waitforit Ericksen was actually Lily’s own father, as strange as it seemed. The other story this week was really all just about Ted and Robin competing against each other to determine who had the better relationship, and really, the answer turns out to be simple: neither of them. Both of them have some major flaws in how they communicate, and this was really the first sign that Ted and Victoria and Robin and Nick were not going to make it … at least when we are talking about the action in the present rather than any flashforwards provided by our narrator Ted. It was funny, but it was hardly the sort of story that we are going to remember weeks down the road.

Overall, this was more of a standard episode for the show. There were no revelations, at least outside of what we already knew in that both relationships were going to end by the end of the month. Our major complaint? That for whatever reason, the show still has not addressed the fact that Nick was involved in an episode many seasons ago.
