How Agents of SHIELD season 6 exists in Avengers: Endgame timeline

Agents of SHIELD

By and large, the impression that we’ve gotten from the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe is that everyone is in lockstep with one another — meaning, basically that various shows and movies have a chance to communicate on every little twist under the sun.

However, there is something a little bit odd about Agents of SHIELD season 6 in terms of the timeline … but before we get to that, we should go ahead and note that there are some major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame within this piece. If you want to remain unspoiled, it’s probably a good idea that you stop reading now.

Still with us? Well, let’s talk a little bit more about when certain events are being set. As most of you who saw the movies now know, it took a good five years in order for Avengers: Endgame to bring back some of the characters who were lost courtesy of Thanos, and with that in mind, it means that SHIELD is going to be operating in a really weird span of time within this upcoming season.

Basically, season 6 of Agents of SHIELD is going to be taking place a year into the snap-pocalypse, and apparently, every single member of SHIELD is extremely lucky in that none of them were taken out as a result of Thanos. They’re all still there, at least other than Phil Coulson who died for other reasons. (If you somehow haven’t heard just yet, Clark Gregg will be returning, albeit in a very different role than anything that we have seen from him before.)

How will the show handle this?

We feel like it’s going to be tricky, given that mentioning it frequently could come as a distraction to the story … but it’s also rather hard to just ignore it entirely. It’s really all going to come down to however the Agents of SHIELD writers want to focus on their own story. If they tell a compelling-enough narrative, remember when the series is set probably won’t be that important. Agents of SHIELD has been largely independent of the Marvel movies for some time, even if there are references. It seemed like it was a little bit earlier on in its run that it was a little more directly tied to some of the events of the films. Now, it seems to be charting more of its own course on its own two feet.

Luckily, we won’t have to wait all that long to see what is coming, given that Agents of SHIELD will be back on ABC next month. Hopefully, this will help to fill a big programming void for the vast majority of the summer.
