Roswell, New Mexico season 2 renewal hopes at The CW: Will it happen?

Roswell, New Mexico

As we circle around tonight’s finale, this feels like the perfect time to look into the Roswell, New Mexico season 2 renewal odds one final time. Where are things now, and where do we expect for them to go by the time we get around to May sweeps?

Before we dive into this article further, here’s a reminder that you can also check out our video take on season 2 at the bottom of this article — for more insight, remember to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for some more insight.

Let’s start here by looking at the thing that tends to matter the most for any and all shows, even ones that are airing in 2019 where there are SO many different viewing options: The ratings in the 18-49 demographic. To date, Roswell, New Mexico season 1 is bringing in around a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and then over a million viewers a week. We’re not going to tell you that these are sensational numbers per se, but they are nonetheless still notable. What’s perhaps the most notable is that they are still in line with what we’re seeing from a number of other new CW series. The 18-49 demo ratings are comparable to what you’re seeing with both Charmed and then also Legacies, and Roswell is actually conquering both of them in terms of its overall total viewers.

Is there something that helps this particular show in the form of its lead-in? Sure, but we think that airing after The Flash only goes so far. Roswell does need to develop a good many fans in its own right, and we do think that it’s managed to do that over the course of the year.

What else matters from here

We’d say that the DVR figures over the next few weeks are fiercely important, just as the viewing numbers are on the CW website. We think that this is a show that can be successfully binge-watched without a problem and there are going to be many people out there who likely opt to enjoy the show in this particular format.

For us, we just think that The CW can afford to lose Roswell at this time. Just consider some of the things that are working for it, with perhaps the most important being that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, iZombie, and Jane the Virgin are all ending this season. Add to this the uncertain future of some other shows including All American and In the Dark, and we don’t think that The CW can afford to lose too many other shows. We think that a season 2 renewal is incoming, and the network will be intrigued to see what a summer’s worth of streaming does for this show. We could have a Riverdale situation here, where all of that extra time off leads to a rather-nice increase in terms of its numbers.
