The future of the Ziva storyline on NCIS at the moment remains one of the series’ biggest mysteries, and for good reason. For starters, the writers clearly want it this way. They want there to be question marks dangling as to whether or not the character will come back, but they’ve clearly put a lot of work in regarding Bishop keeping up operations within Ziva’s old office and also the discussion about the character still being alive.
Most notable, the writers have done their part to ensure that this storyline is not forgotten — hence, it being referenced in some shape or form in almost every episode since “She,” even something that came about via a ripple effect, like the events of that episode causing Gibbs to contemplate changing one of his rules.
One thing that does feel clear now is that if the writers do continue to reference this storyline, they are going to find a way to move it forward; they won’t just bring you various replications of what you’ve seen time and time again already. In speaking on this subject more via TVLine, here is what executive producer Steven D. Binder had to say:
“It’s such a great thread, I’d hate to leave it on the table… But like anything, we don’t just want to tease the tease. If we do pull at it, we’re going to have something interesting behind it, and not just keep doing the same beat over and over again.”
So basically, the idea here is to give you something more if there is something more to give. We do think that there could be before the end of the season, but what form it’s featured in remains to be seen. We do talk about some interesting finale-title rumors over at the link here and in the video below — if you enjoy that, remember to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for other updates and to view our official NCIS playlist.
Binder also does reference in the interview that there is absolutely a great deal of material that the writers could explore for the Ziva character, even if Cote de Pablo does not appear:
“I don’t want to say ‘the sky’s the limit,’ but given that she’s been gone for years, there’s a lot that could have happened that could be fodder for us … even if she’s not necessarily present.
“We’re always trying to think about what the audience wants to see, what we want to see, what makes sense, what’s interesting… We’re talking about all of it, all of the time. And we’ll see what sticks.”
What to take away from all of this
It’s rather simple: The writers are at least hearing the enthusiasm out there and understanding it. As for whether or not it turns into something more within the world of NCIS proper, that’s something that we have to wait and see on. A lot of it depends heavily on whether or not Cote is open and interested in returning — and then, there’s also the question of how long you can include Ziva without bringing in Tony, given that he the last we heard, he was caring for their daughter in another part of the globe.
The next new NCIS episode airs a week from Tuesday. For some additional news all about that, we suggest that you visit the link here.
