Fear the Walking Dead season 5: Could Kim Dickens ever return?

Fear the Walking Dead season 5 is returning to AMC a little bit later in this year, and on the surface, it feels almost like a totally different show. Other than Alicia and Strand, most of the characters from the first season of the show are now gone; it’s a total reinvention. A lot of these deaths have been devastating to differing degrees, but Madison’s is the one we have the hardest time shaking.

To us, Madison was this show’s Rick Grimes, a tough-as-nails warrior with a big heart who wanted to do her best for everyone close to her. It would be one thing for the character to be killed off because of Dickens’ desire to leave, but here’s the thing — that’s never what she wanted. Her hope was always to stick around on the show, and she was written out for creative reasons. She didn’t have that much of a say in it.

Kim Dickens did a fantastic job as the character, and while we’d love to see her back on the show, that seems to be more than a little bit doubtful. That’s something that Dickens herself seemed to echo in a recent interview with MovieWeb on the subject:

“As far as I know, she’s dead! … It was the (acting role) I’m most proud of. Helping build that show from the beginning, across three different countries, that character was something I felt I had grown my whole career to get to play. I’m so proud of it, and it ended too soon for what I wanted, but there were a lot of changes over there creatively. I can’t imagine they would want to revisit Madison, but she was a great character. I’m so proud of it.”

If there was a reason to bring back Madison, what could it be? Obviously, there’s the idea where you bring her back and the character is somehow (shockingly) still alive … but we don’t see that. Flashbacks could be a possibility, but Alicia’s the only real character that you can do that with. We loved this character, and we were sad to see her go. Nonetheless, letting go of people is just a part of what you have to do if you are a longtime fan of this show. It’s an unavoidable part of the franchise DNA.

We gotta accept that Madison is gone; beyond that, we really are just hoping that season 5 doesn’t kill off any other longtime character. While we know that Fear the Walking Dead may be promoted these days more as though it is Morgan’s story, for us personally we still think of it more as the tale of Alicia Clark and how much her life has changed since the very beginning. She’s the real through-line of this series now.
