Is Katie Cassidy leaving Arrow, Laurel Lance role — again?

Arrow

Tonight’s new episode of Arrow served as a means to ask a lot of new questions in regards to Laurel Lance. Also, the status of one Katie Cassidy on this show.

Is it possible that Cassidy is leaving this series and the Black Siren iteration of her role — again? Based on the events of what we saw on “Lost Canary,” it was definitely something to consider. We’re talking here about a story that led to Laurel deciding to return home to Earth-2 in order to tie up some loose ends and no longer keep running. The message here was a powerful one, and that’s probably why it felt like there was a sense of permanence to some of what the character was saying here. After everything that she’s gone through, it does make a certain degree of sense for her to go back to the place where it all began for her.

Yet, on the other side of everything you’re about to see, we do still come bearing a singular message: Cassidy is not done with this show. Or, at least she’s not done yet. Speaking via TVLine, this news was confirmed by show executive producer Beth Schwartz:

“Katie does not leave the show; she comes back this season … It appears like [she leaves], but it’s not true. She’s still [part of the show].”

This news is probably so valuable and welcome just because of how there are so many other departures all across the world of Arrow right now. Think to earlier on this season, when Echo Kellum departed his role of Curtis Holt. Meanwhile, the news is already out there now that we’re seeing the end of the road for Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak at the end of the season. It’s possible that one or both of them return for the final season, but that’s really the only thing that we have to cling to at the moment in regards to them.

Cassidy’s an original cast member for this show and while we understand that she’s not playing the original Laurel Lance like she once was, her importance to the show’s legacy cannot be understated. We think that this version of Laurel is all about redemption, sympathy, understanding, and of course kicking a little bit of butt along the way. All of these things can be true. The most important thing, for now, is that you will have a chance to see all of this stuff touched on and discussed a little bit more as we continue to push forward with the remainder of this season.
