Outlander season 5 day one: What we’ve learned already

Outlander

Outlander season 5, day one is officially in the books! The cast returned to Scotland last week with the first table read and now, some actual footage has been shot out on location. Sam Heughan was a fantastic steward throughout the day, posting little snippets throughout his Instagram Stories from start to finish. It was such a little thing for him, but it gave you consistently an idea of what it’s like going through the grind of work and all of the various check-marks that he and the team had to hit before wrapping things up. We know that there was some footage shot, but good luck trying to figure out precisely what it was. For the next several months, we’re gearing up towards a Fort Knox-like dynamic around set where production tries to keep things as under wraps as humanly possible.

So, for now, we think Sam, and we also come here presenting a handful of things that we learned about Outlander season 5 from all of the various teasers presented today.

1. A lot of the same crew is back – This shouldn’t be altogether shocking to anyone out there. Outlander is a community behind the scenes, so it only makes some sense that we see this sense of community continue to blossom between the cast and the people who work their magic to make sure things run smoothly — think in terms of everyone from the location managers to the drivers to the makeup team.

2. The cast is already out in the field – While we know that there’s a lot of interior filming to be done, it appeared as though Heughan spent some time outdoors today judging from the outdoor holding area and the setup from some of the crew.

3. The days are still long – It seemed like today got off to an early start and while Sam wrapped before sundown, he still was working a long time leading up to it. It’s easy to prepare for that to be the norm, and eventually for filming to shift to all sorts of random times around the clock. Think in terms of night shoots — does anyone these days really get to go a full season without to take part in them? Doesn’t feel like it.

4. There are still more cast members to film – Given how quiet things were on some social-media accounts other than Heughan’s, it’s fair to speculate that not everyone within the greater Outlander family was on set today. That will change over the days to come.
