Outlander season 5 filming officially begins; Sam Heughan updates

Outlander

It’s been a long wait jammed full of speculation and eagle-eyed fans waiting for good news — now, we’ve got it! Outlander season 5 filming is officially underway in Scotland.

Over the past several hours, Sam Heughan has uploaded a number of fun images and teases from the start of production on his Instagram Stories, including a picture at his trailer, some of the crew, and an area for everyone to take a break. Not every single cast member works the same day, which is why you may not see similar updates from a number of other cast members. We imagine that we’re going to be getting all sorts of assorted updates from many of them as the days pass on and we start to see the Outlander community expand outward again.

Season 5 could be one of the most significant yet for Heughan, starting of course with his status as a producer this time around. He’s more involved in the direction of the story than ever before and has earned this opportunity off of the strength of his hard work. While sometimes having a number of creative voices can be challenging, we think in this case it’s good for he and Caitriona Balfe to be involved. They know Jamie and Claire Fraser perhaps better than anyone at this point, and everyone on the team collectively wants the same thing — a beautiful, epic love story that shows all sorts of dimensions and pleases both book readers and non-readers alike.

As for the nature of Jamie’s story, there is a huge amount of content to prepare for. Take, for example, Jamie trying to figure out how to escape the bind put upon him by Governor Tryon. We’ve written about this already, but this central struggle is finding a way to both help Murtagh but also not spark a war on Fraser’s Ridge. Claire knows what happens with the Revolutionary War, so we don’t see the Frasers and the British strolling around arm in arm forever. However, we do foresee them trying to maintain a delicate relationship as to not cause Jamie problems for as long as humanly possible. Jamie also has a number of responsibilities to tend to on Fraser’s Ridge itself and is still working to try and be a good father and now, a good grandfather. He also still needs to work his way to being a good father-in-law for Roger given that these two guys hardly got their relationship off to a great start. Maybe they’re on a level playing field now, but we’ll believe that more when we see it.

Expect more Outlander filming news over the next several months, and expect the show to probably not return to Starz for a rather long time — we’ll be surprised if it airs this year.
