The Enemy Within episode 8 preview: How it all began for Shepherd

The Enemy Within

Every superhero has an origin story; the same goes for supervillain, vigilante, or ambiguous antihero like Erica Shepherd. Her story is going to be front and center on The Enemy Within episode 8 next week, entitled “An Offer.” This is an episode designed for the sole purpose of giving you a window into why Shepherd is the way that she is — including who she’s spent time with and how she was forced to make heartbreaking, painful decisions that she deemed necessary for the sake of doing her job.

Did we get a small sense of some of these decisions and Shepherd’s thinking all the way back in the premiere? Sure, but think of that as the distilled version. It’s almost like tasting a fine wine. You can get some of its notes from the first sip, but the more you drink, the more complex and interesting you find it. Of course, you also get a little bit drunk if you have too many … which is probably how you’d feel if the entirety of this show was flashbacks. Luckily, that’s not happening.

Below, CarterMatt offers up The Enemy Within episode 8 synopsis with some more scoop all about what you can see in this installment:

04/15/2019 (10:00PM – 11:00PM) (Monday) : Flashbacks to the past reveal the fateful events that led CIA Deputy Director Erica Shepherd to betray her country and the ensuing investigation that put her on a collision course with Will Keaton. TV-14 V

This is the perfect time to tell this story, given that we are basically around the natural halfway point in the season. We’ve met Emily, understood Keaton, and also recognized who they are fighting in Tal and just how dangerous he is. The value of where we are moving forward now is that we’re getting a wonderful chance to better understand the past and how that shapes a little bit more of the story’s future. We like where The Enemy Within is currently at, and we’re certainly excited to see where it’s going entering the finale now that we’re understanding more flavor notes and just how important these stakes are.

Of course, none of this is stopping us from also pondering over a larger question — how is all of this going to play into a potential season 2? We don’t know if a season 2 is in the cards just yet, but we’re doing our best to remain cautiously optimistic that such a thing is coming. That’s a subject we’ll be previewing a little later in the week with a larger discussion of the ratings. Maybe there is a season 2 Big Bad or something else that will be uncovered down the road … or maybe we’re just going to keep this machine a-rolling’ with Tal at the center of all of the chaos for a little bit longer.
