Could NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 be the final season?

NCIS: Los Angeles

Is NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 could be the last one for the series on CBS? Let’s start this article off with a personal opinion: We don’t think so. Nonetheless, that’s not changing the current state of the rumor mill, which is actively churning out theories and discussion that we are nearing the end of this edition of the franchise.

Why are these rumors being unearthed right now? There are actually three very good reasons for it.

1. Kensi and Deeks are married – This has arguably been the #1 event that longtime fans have been waiting to see from the beginning of this show, and with that done, people won’t be angry over the idea of the show ending — they’ve already gotten to the ceremony and their vows.

2. Nell and Eric’s future is in jeopardy – during this past episode, Eric received a fantastic job opportunity in San Francisco, one with a significant salary increase and one that makes sense given that Nell’s mother is receiving medical treatment in the Bay Area.

3. Sam contemplating his own future separate from the team – That’s been happening for a while via Goldberg’s character — Sam is thinking that he will eventually want to leave Los Angeles, but he’s not ready just yet. This may be a cause of at least some optimism that in his mind, this is something that could happen a year or two from now.

What we think the NCIS: Los Angeles producers are doing right now are covering their bases — in case the show isn’t renewed or Eric and Nell don’t end up returning, for example, there’s already some writing on the books that will make us feel as though certain characters are happening. Some of these twists may also be red herrings; last season, Deeks’ bar became evidence that somehow Eric Christian Olsen would be departing. That didn’t end up being the case.

The state of the ratings

This is what we really have to discuss if we’re to have some sort of serious conversation all about the future of this show. Here’s the great news — ratings-wise, there’s almost zero reason to end this show. Nada. To date, season 10 is averaging a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and also 7.5 million live viewers. It’s almost even in the demo from season 9 and it’s down only 5% in total viewers. Shows in 2019 beg for that sort of retention rate. This show is proving to be an anchor for CBS, even in spite of Hetty being MIA for most of the season, and it’d make little sense to get rid of it. We think there’s a bigger chance of there being sweeping cast changes than the show getting canceled, but we’re not even sold on sweeping cast changes just yet. We’re not dismissing the Nell/Eric storyline, but there’s a lot of time left in the season.
