Roswell, New Mexico season 2 renewal debate: Do you want more?

Roswell, New Mexico

The status of Roswell, New Mexico season 2 is, at the moment, one of The CW’s few big question marks. If you look across their schedule, most of their decisions have already made been made — All American is an exception. In this case, Roswell didn’t get a pickup at the same time as some of the network’s larger hits because it was still in its infancy when decisions were made on the likes of The Flash, Riverdale, and many more.

Now, we’re nearing the end of Roswell, New Mexico season 1, and we like to think we’ve got enough info to make an informed decision. Are we feeling good that the sci-fi series will touch down for another season, or is it about to be shipped off to outer space for good? Check out our analysis within, and remember that at the very bottom is a poll for you to share some of your own thoughts on this subject.

The case for a renewal – Let’s play a game of comparison, shall we? Season 1 of Roswell, New Mexico is averaging a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.1 million viewers a week. Meanwhile, season 1 of Legacies averaged a 0.3 rating in the demo and just over 1 million viewers a week. Legacies has already been renewed. So, if you were to assume that all other parts financially were equal, Roswell should be coming back for more. (If you want to go a step further, Charmed is averaging a 0.3 rating and just over 900,000 viewers and it has already been renewed.)

In comparison to a lot of the other new CW shows, clearly Roswell falls right into the pocket of what they’re looking to achieve. This is also the sort of show that should be able to build an audience over time when more viewers discover it. Maybe not every young viewer out there is familiar with the original show, but you have possible multi-generational appeal here via streaming platforms, which you don’t quite have with every other show on the CW.

The case against it – You can potentially make the argument that the reason Roswell is faring better than Charmed and Legacies is the Flash factor. The Flash is the top-rated show on The CW, and of course it makes sense that the show that airs after it would get a slight ratings boost. Where would Roswell, New Mexico be without it? Beyond that, is it getting enough online and DVR viewership to make the network happy? Every network tends to have around one cancellation a season that raises an eyebrow, and it’s certainly possible that this one could be it for the folks over at this network.

Our Verdict

The way that we’re looking at things at the moment, it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which Roswell, New Mexico gets the TV guillotine, mostly because The CW has virtually no reason to chop it. Its ratings are similar to its other first-year shows, it’s got a ton of story potential, and it also has a lot of actors in the cast familiar to the network’s demographic. Also, just think in terms of the show’s visual aesthetic and specific subject matter; it’s different than anything else the network has. If you want to celebrate things that are different, why wouldn’t you want to keep around this?
