This Is Us season 3 finale spoilers: Expect answer on Randall, Beth

This Is Us season 2

The This Is Us season 3 finale is must-watch television. As a matter of fact, it’s television where missing it is going to be a cause for serious regret. The title for this episode is “Her,” and that’s a gargantuan clue to where the final steps of this narrative this season are going. We know that this “Her,” from the flash-forward timeline, is more than likely Rebecca; what’s still to pan out are all of the finer details spread out in between.

This weekend the cast and crew for the NBC show gathered together for PaleyFest, and while there, we had a chance to see a few compelling teases on what lies ahead. That includes getting answers on some enormous questions, including the status of Randall and Beth’s marriage. Maybe some of that will be wrapped up in the present, whereas others could be saved for the flash-forwards. Hey, it’s possible that the two get through the current, super-epic fight only to still have a much larger one a little bit further down the road.

In speaking to Variety at the panel, show executive producer Dan Fogelman made his stance clear on the many different reasons why this finale will pack a punch — one that will likely send you reeling and speculating throughout the summer.

“Obviously there’s a tremendous amount of attention on Randall and Beth’s storyline. There will be an answer there in terms of the long-term health of their relationship … We have all of our storylines building to that in the last episode. It’s kind of gigantic. The last five minutes of the episode are sprawling.”

One other word thrown around at this panel was “midpoint” — a pretty clear reference to there being six seasons of the show when the dust settles. This is as far as we’d like to see the story go, and with ratings being where they are, it’d be understandable for NBC to let it go this long and then let the show ride off to the sunset. The fact that we’re only at the third season does raise some interesting questions as to how far this story can go. For example, are there really three more seasons’ worth of Jack stories? Are we going to see Milo Ventimiglia having stories about putting on his shoes and going to the store for bread in season 5, mostly because there’s not much else of note to tell by that point? Here’s an interesting thought — casting Milo as a different character and having him play a different role down the road. That’s probably not going to happen — it seems more fitting for pounding-the-drum conspiracy theories — but it’s a fun thing to think about.

Fogelman also told the PaleyFest audience that he’s already written out the show’s season 4 premiere — even though there’s no renewal yet! Clearly, the lack of renewal is mostly just NBC making sure all the documents are signed properly. It’s going to happen, and it’s largely a matter of when so much more than if. We’ve already heard that there’s footage in the can for a possible series finale down the road, which serves as yet another reminder that no show out there plans with the same amount of vigor and care as This Is Us does.
