God Friended Me, NCIS Los Angeles, Madam Secretary delayed by NCAA

CBS

Bad news for everyone hoping to check out God Friended Me, NCIS: Los Angeles, and the rest of the CBS schedule on time tonight. All of the programming has been delayed because of the NCAA Tournament, not that this should be some sort of dramatic, jaw-dropping surprise.

Let’s start things off here with God Friended Me. The CBS show is going to be kicking things off at 8:40 p.m. Eastern time, a good forty minutes later than usual, thanks to the end of CBS’ basketball coverage running late. Because the network tends to run 60 Minutes before that, it makes everything run even later than usual.

The thing we’re the most disappointed in is the idea of the delay hurting renewal prospects, especially for a show like Madam Secretary that is very much on the bubble. We don’t think CBS will hold the delay against it, but it’s still a bummer. We want the show to get those big numbers, and it’s so late after the tournament that it’s hard to think that it will benefit all that much from the lead-in.

Are all three shows worth waiting around for? Absolutely so, largely because of the fact that they’re bringing a TON creatively to the table. We’re near the end of the season for many of them — NCIS: Los Angeles is really the only one with a substantial run of episodes still to go.

Here’s the silver lining at the moment — we do think that there aren’t going to be TOO many more hiatuses over the weeks ahead. Why is that? There aren’t just too many more reasons for large delays. Maybe there could be something next week but after that, the only other break we could imagine is April 7, due to the Academy of Country Music Awards. The God Friended Me finale in mid-April luckily shouldn’t be impacted by too much, and neither should anything else after the fact.

Were the schedule for the rest of this season not so already set-in-stone, we could actually see CBS pushing back the start of Madam Secretary for a while. What’s the reasoning for that? It’s as simple as it starting SO DARN LATE. There are a lot of people out there who aren’t even going to be awake at the time in which it starts, and often when the 10:00 p.m. Sunday show premieres this late at night, we do see the network opt to just wait and put it back on the air a little further down the road. That’s just not happening here because there are plans for this show to end at a given point, and then for CBS to air some different programming in its place.

(For those wondering, 60 Minutes started late at 7:40 p.m. Eastern.)
