Supergirl season 4 episode 15 spoilers: Lex Luthor’s arrival

Lex Luthor

Do we actually need to generate any further excitement about Lex Luthor’s appearance on Supergirl season 4 episode 15? In a lot of ways, that feels futile and redundant. How do you generate more intrigue around one of the most-iconic comic-book villains … ever? The idea of introducing him sounded alarms; Supergirl getting Jon Cryer on board as the character sounded even more. You’ve got an accomplished actor in this role, someone with a history of great performances and an understanding of what Lex means. He’s evil, but he’s also devious. He’s manipulative and he’s very smart. There is a reason why he was able to accrue so much power in the first place — he got some others on his side.

If you are fully evil, it’s pretty darn to get anyone to believe in you. You’re a psychopath. The best villains have influence and relish power. Even someone like The Joker, who relies mostly on madness to get his point across, still has his own army of the disturbed.

It makes sense for Lex’s debut to be a little bit smaller in scale — rather than focusing on army, it instead seems to be focusing more on the one … and that one is his sister Lena. In the context of this particular story, her feelings towards him really matter more than most others. She is the one who has a decision to make and she is one of the only ones who can help him.

For some more insight, take a look at the Supergirl season 4 episode 15 synopsis below:

JON CRYER GUEST STARS AS ICONIC DC COMICS’ VILLAIN LEX LUTHOR – Secretly furloughed from prison due to failing health, Lex Luthor (guest star Jon Cryer) visits his sister, Lena (Katie McGrath), to seek her help finding a cure. Savvy as ever, Lena is suspicious of Lex’s motives but when she’s faced with a life and death situation, she must decide how she truly feels about her brother. Meanwhile, Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and J’onn (David Harewood) face off against Manchester Black (guest star David Ajala). James’ sister Kelly (guest star Azie Tesfai) comes to town. Tawnia Mckiernan directed the episode written by Derek Simon & Nicki Holcomb (#415). Original airdate 3/17/2019.

It’s easy to be most excited for Lex’s arrival in this episode. Yet, there are some other elements in this episode worth watching out for. Clearly, there are fireworks that will come via Supergirl and J’onn versus Manchester. There have been for much of the past few weeks, though the writers need to make sure that all of these showdowns feel different if they’re going to keep doing them. We’re already a little nervous about that just based on where we are right now.

Then, there’s Kelly

What will James’ sister be bringing with her personality-wise to National City? We’re hoping a new perspective and a chance to get to know him a little bit better. One of the longtime problems for this character is that he almost always exists as a foil for someone else and rarely ever gets to stand on his own two feet. This is a chance to deliver something new — history we can grab and feel in our own two hands.

Still, there’s no doubt that Lex is going to command most of the attention. It’s hard to envision anything else.
