‘American Idol’ season 12: Is there a mistake in Nicki Minaj – Mariah Carey feud?

Ever since the headlines first started to pour in yesterday about there being a major fight unfolding on the set of “American Idol” in Charlotte between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey on the judges’ panel, we were almost immediately torn. Why? From a standpoint of getting attention for the filming process, we certainly understand why it was awfully convenient for a video of the two superstars screaming and cursing to make its way to the internet. How often do we find ourselves really talking about “American Idol” at this time of year? Really, the answer here is rather simple: never. The audition rounds typically happen under a veil of secrecy, and the only time you really find anything out is when spoiler sites get a hold of anything.

However, we are a little bit curious still as to whether or not this fighting is the best thing for the show as a whole. Remember when this competition was all about the singers? Those days seem pretty far behind us now, as we have a feeling that a once-described “family show” is going to become more of a hotbed for drama. Plus, we also don’t know how this is going to be good for either Mariah or Nicki to be painted with the brush that all they want to do is stick around and create drama.

There’s little question that the show is really pushing for the judges to be the stars right now; after all, they even had Ryan Seacrest say the following on his radio show:

“[There was] a very heated, intense argument towards the end of the day after a contestant did a little bit of a performance in the room … And, so, yeah, it was heated. It did go too far, to the point where the producers said with just a few more contestants left, ‘Let’s call it a day.’ And, [they] called a ‘wrap’.”

Do you think that “American Idol” is doing the right thing when it comes to creating so many headlines based off of this fight?
