The Good Doctor season 2: Freddie Highmore on experience directing

Even before the start of the second season, it was clear that the actor wanted to have a greater sense of creative involvement with the show behind the scenes. This is why he made the decision in order to write the first episode and, beyond that, why he wanted to direct at this point. We know that this is going to be an important installment of the series given that it marks the arrival of Daniel Dae Kim in his recurring role of Dr. Jackson Han. This is an extremely important role in that he’s a significant thorn in Shaun’s side, let alone someone who could end his career in the operating room.
So what did Highmore have to say about working on this episode behind the scenes? That is something that he discussed a little bit further in a new interview with ABC 7:
“I really enjoyed it. I got to direct on my old show [Bates Motel] so this was the second go at it … It was a wonderful experience. The cast and the crew are so wonderful they carry you along and want you to succeed.”
We do imagine that this is a gig that Highmore could continue to have for more episodes moving forward, even if it’s a hard job to regularly take on. When you are an actor in front of the camera, the best thing that you can really hope for is that you can helm an episode or two in a given season. If Freddie wants to be a writer for season 3 (which has already been renewed), we’re not sure that there is feasibly a way in which for him to do more than one. We’ll just have to celebrate however many opportunities we can get for Freddie within this role.
To go along with this, we also just need to cherish how many chances that we can to see Freddie as an actor overall. After all, there are only going to be three episodes beyond this upcoming one.
