Outlander hiatus: Five suggested Richard Rankin TV roles

Richard Rankin

It’s Friday in the Outlander off-season, and on CarterMatt that means one thing: Discussing suggested TV roles for the cast during the hiatus!

If this is the first piece that you’ve read on the site on this particular subject, let’s get some of the ground rules here out of the way. For starters, all of this is hypothetical — we know filming is starting soon and in reality, it’s impossible for the cast to really have the time to work on much else. But what if they did have the time to do a couple of episodes of another show? What would it be? We’ve already done pieces like this for Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe; today, we’re doing it for the man behind Roger in Richard Rankin! We’ve got five different suggestions below, and of course, if you’ve got some suggestions of your own, let us know in the comments!

(For those wondering, Richard does have another role coming in Trust Me, which we’re assuming will be coming on the air in 2019.)

Will & Grace – There’s something about Rankin’s energy that makes us think that he’d thrive in an American sitcom environment — why not have him in one of the most-popular sitcoms from the past couple of decades? It’d be fun to see him drop by as a new love interest for Will, or at least someone who goes toe-to-toe with Karen in some surprising ways.

Agents of SHIELD – For anyone wondering, this is a shameful attempt to just get Rankin and Iain De Caestecker in some scenes together. Consider this the full Scottish – superhero TV invasion. Ironically, we’d actually prefer Rankin to play a villain here, someone who is the total opposite of Roger and interested in the destruction of much of SHIELD. Maybe he’s a political mastermind who infiltrates the organization, hoping to destroy it from within.

Better Call Saul – Bring Rankin into the Gene timeline, and have him play a character who knows the truth about who Bob Odenkirk’s character really is. This is a sneaky role designed to deceive and surprise — maybe he’ll even have some connections to some Breaking Bad favorites we’ve already come to know and love.

American Horror Story – Few shows celebrate things that are weird, unpredictable, or surprising quite like this one. Our idea here is to give Richard a two-episode arc as someone almost unrecognizable, whether it be a demon wearing heavy makeup or some sort of ghostly spirit haunting the main character. This should be the sort of role that is memorable despite limited screen time, where viewers will discuss him for weeks to come.

The Blacklist – What if Raymond Reddington had a son nobody knew about? There’s something appealing about Rankin in that sort of role, a wide-eyed and seemingly-innocent man whose life changes upon realizing that his father is a criminal mastermind.
