The Bachelor: Colton Underwood leaves event after inappropriate touching

Colton Underwood

While there have been a number of humorous stories out there related to The Bachelor as of late, this one is really anything but.

In a new post via his Instagram Stories, Colton Underwood revealed that he was touched inappropriately while at a recent charity event in San Diego; as a result of that, he chose to leave the event early. While it hasn’t been referenced frequently on the show, one of Colton’s biggest pursuits these days is his Legacy Foundation in support of cystic fibrosis. It’s easy to be cynical of the guy on the show, the fence-jumping, or a lot of the antics that you tend to see, but this is clearly something that was a little bit different. It’s painful and it’s something that can tick with you.

Here is some of what Colton had to say about the incident in the aforementioned post:

“I’m sorry if you didn’t get a picture at the event last night, but at one point during the event I was grabbed and touched inappropriately while people were throwing cameras in my face … I am the type of person who would have stood in line for hours to make sure anyone who supported the event got a picture, but once that happened I had to do what was best for me as a human being.”

It’s hard to blame Colton for wanting to take care of himself in this moment, given that had he stayed, he would have been forced to re-live that over and over again. It’s a very demeaning act and inappropriate contact towards men is not something that gets discussed enough. This is why stories, such as the ones shared by Terry Crews and Brendan Fraser, are so important.

Hopefully, Colton’s actions tonight do show further that despite whatever people may seen on TV, that doesn’t give anyone license to jump all over or touch Colton inappropriately. What you see on The Bachelor is between consenting adults, people who want to be close to each other and spend time in that particular environment. Being at a public event is a very different sort of setting — he’s not just some physical object to be gawked at in real life.

The next new episode of The Bachelor airs on Monday night. We’re sure the show will go on (it was filmed far before this incident), but this is a conversation that could still be worth having at a live event down the road.
