In a new post on Twitter (which you can check out below), the series star/executive producer shared a photo suggesting that he is back in the director’s role — something that he has held a couple of times in the past here in addition to an episode of his classic show Home Improvement. Allen last directed near the end of season 6 when the show aired on ABC in the 2016-17 television season.
So why take on this role, especially when you’re someone who is already balancing acting and also doing consistent stand-up comedy? We think that a big part of it has to do with satisfying some sort of longstanding creative itch. If you’re a performer, you love to find new opportunities to test yourself — that may be hard to do at times on a sitcom set where there is so much familiarity, so you often have to either find something new within a scene or find some other way to creative stretch your wings. Directing is a great way to do that, given that it allows you a chance to oversee the operation for a given episode. It’s also a difficult acting challenge since you have to balance out directing and then also being on-screen — something that can be rather tough for many people. It’s probably especially tough for Tim given that Mike Baxter is a huge part of Last Man Standing — the title is a reference to the character! It’s hard for him to ever have a super-light workload in an episode as an actor, so he can focus more on the direction which is something that a lot of other actors do when they are behind the camera (not as much screen time to be behind the camera).
Based on how long it takes Last Man Standing (or any sitcom, for that matter) to turn around an episode, more than likely Tim’s episode is going to air at some point a little bit later in the spring. Last Man Standing is going to air an hour’s worth of entertainment this Friday; to read a little bit more about that, and about how Mike is going to do his part to be the best wedding officiant possible, be sure to visit the link here.
