Saturday Night Live preview: Expectations for Halsey episode!

Saturday Night Live

Tonight, Saturday Night Live is returning to NBC after a short hiatus with one of their riskiest episodes of the season. It’s always an enigma when you’ve got a host taking on the gig the first time — especially when they’re not really known as an actor or a comedian. Such is the case with Halsey, who is also serving as the musical guest.

So can Halsey deliver? We have to go by reputation here, and we have seen a number of music stars do very well in this role in the past. Take, for example, Bruno Mars, who totally killed it when he hosted the show. Katy Perry also had a pretty decent SNL hosting gig, though we think that she actually fared better doing cameo appearances in sketches than the entire episode she hosted. Miley Cyrus and Drake both have had great hosting stints in the past, though they admittedly benefited from having done a lot of acting work in the past.

Of course, there is at least one super-notable (and somewhat recent) example of a show host from the musical world who didn’t pan out: Justin Bieber. The energy in that episode just didn’t feel natural and while we do think that he had an interest in coming out and being funny, there was just a disconnect there. A lot of it may have just been due to his fame being at the atmospheric level that it was at the time he was on the show; if he were to go on now, he may fare a little bit better.

We do think that Halsey is fairly funny in the promo below, or at least as funny as someone is going to be within the confines of something like this. It’s important to remember here that SNL promos have a tendency to be super-short and there’s really not all that much you can do in them. She’s going to have the support of a lot of the cast, and the one bit of advice we’d give her is to not be afraid of being a supporting player at times rather than the star — this is what Claire Foy did during her hosting gig and that was one of our favorite shows of the entire season so far.
