America’s Got Talent: The Champions video: Susan Boyle returns with ‘I Dreamed a Dream’

America's Got Talent: The Champions

For Monday’s America’s Got Talent: The ChampionsSusan Boyle is back with “I Dreamed a Dream.” If you even know one iota of information about her story, then you know that this is her most-important song. It’s one that she first performed on Britain’s Got Talent, and it’s the one that made her a global superstar.

We should start things out here by saying that we remember vividly precisely where we were when we first heard that performance — it was the one that we credit for getting us into BGT after years of just watching the American version of the show. It was a fantastic underdog story, one that showed that an introverted woman from Scotland with no fame could become one of the biggest singing stars in the world.

Therefore, when she sings it now it’s almost hard to treat it like a song — it’s bigger than a song. It brings all of those emotions back and it’s really hard to even focus on whether or not this is her best version of the song or not. We’re really not sure. What we are confident in at the moment is this: It’s certainly one of the most emotional versions. Susan is slick and polished throughout, and she performs the song with precision and care. She knows it at this point like the back of her hand and knows precisely what notes to carry out.

In the end, we do think that Susan could easily win, though we do worry about the fact that her success may ultimately count against her — she doesn’t need the victory in terms of her pocketbook or her legacy. Does that make her undeserving? Hardly. There is a school of thought that Susan could’ve or should’ve come out and done something that she hasn’t done before on other shows, but it’s been almost ten years since her first performance on Britain’s Got Talent — plus, this song is specifically so iconic that it was worthy of a reprisal.

We’ll see what happens come Monday night, and we’ll be back over the weekend with rankings for all of the performers!
