Today, NBC confirmed that ventriloquist/singer/former champ Darci Lynne will be joined on Monday by magician Jon Dorenbos, as the two were chosen out of the entire field of participants.

So what’s our take on this? It’s a little bit mixed. For Darci, we do absolutely think that she is a phenomenal performer and talent. She’s a very good singer, but it’s obvious that it’s mixed with the ventriloquism that makes her stand out. It’s a little shocking that she didn’t advance to the finale in the first place, given that we’re talking about a recent winner that was a clear-cut favorite for more or less the entirety of the season that she was on.

As for the choice of Jon Dorenbos, we totally get it — he’s an accomplished magician and, to go along with that, he’s also someone who has a big fan base and a great story. Personally, we probably would’ve taken Piff the Magic Dragon if the show was looking to add a magic act. If not him, why not pick Kenichi Ebina or Tape Face? There were so many gifted performers who didn’t make it through to the finale already.

In the end, though, it is clear that this is one of those seasons where it’s hard to argue that there is a bad choice anywhere — there are just so many infinitely-talented people that it is really difficult to just pick and choose one or two people who are worthy! A lot of people could’ve made it to the finale and didn’t, and we’re mostly still of the belief that there are some ways format-wise that this season could’ve ended up being better than it was in retrospect. It just is struggling at the moment with having so much talent and so few ways in which to advance it forward. This is still why we’d say that in the event the show ever does something like this again, they find a way to make it live so that America really has their say. Otherwise, it’s difficult to really look at this show the same as the flagship one.
