Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists trailer: Murders & morality

Perfectionists

After great anticipation, Freeform today launched the official Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists trailer. After watching it, does anyone else think that this is the love child of the original series and How to Get Away with Murder?

Within this trailer (which you can check out below), you get a sense more so of the atmosphere of the series than the overall theme. This is really a show asking a series of moral questions, including whether or not murder is ever justified and some of the decisions that go into such a choice. You also get a few glimpses of a number of different things that are obviously important to this story, one way or another — think in terms of a possible funeral, a vigil for someone who is clearly dead, and then also a little bit of romance. You see Alison DiLaurnetis (Sasha Pieterse) at one point, and we know that she and Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish) are both going to be key characters within this story. What makes The Perfectionists different, first and foremost, is the new setting of Beacon Heights. Beyond that, you have a different group of characters to get to know.

If we were to break down a few things further within this trailer, one of the biggest ones is just the simple fact that the deceased seemed to be fairly beloved. Even if there is a desire to kill whoever is murdered at the start of the series, it doesn’t appear to be someone who is universally hated. That does raise some very interesting questions when it comes to the victim, including whether or not this character had a very separate public and private persona? It also makes you wonder about the stability and sanity of the possible killer.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists premieres next month, and clearly the hope here for Freeform is that they can catch even just a little bit of the lightning-in-a-bottle that they had with the flagship show. That was a real pioneer for live-tweeting on the internet and it became one of the biggest hits in the network’s history.

Want a few more details about the very first episode? We are lucky enough to have a short synopsis for you below:

In Beacon Heights, a seemingly perfect town, a group of three college friends struggle with the stress of being overachievers. In the aftermath of the town’s first murder, each Perfectionist hides behind a secret, a lie and an alibi.
