Agents of SHIELD season 6 spoilers: Clark Gregg confirms new role

Clark Gregg

When you see Clark Gregg on Agents of SHIELD season 6, there’s one thing that you should know first and foremost — he is not necessarily playing Phil Coulson.

In a recent first teaser for the upcoming batch of episodes (premiering this summer), we had a chance to actually see the actor in surprising fashion — it didn’t seem like he was actually playing the SHIELD director we’ve all come to know and love. Coulson supposedly died following season 5 and, at least for now, the writers are sticking to that. Gregg’s new character apparently doesn’t know who Phil Coulson even is. There have been suggestions that he is one of the Skrulls, or maybe he is a mysterious entity never explored before on the show.

At the moment, Gregg is staying fairly quiet on the new role, though he did talk briefly about the new part in a new Q&A via Marvel:

“[Phil Coulson] became a very familiar skin in a way, so to find myself playing this other, very mysterious person, who is not Phil Coulson … and the mystery of who that person is, and why he looks like that, is something they have done groundbreaking, wild stuff with, that I’m really lucky to play.”

It seems like no matter what Gregg’s arc is moving forward on the series, it’s going to be exciting and a little bit different — suffice it to say, we do think that this is going to be exciting. We’re always happy when there is a chance for this show to push the envelope and try something  new, and we definitely hope that this Coulson arc stands out from anything else that the show has done with him so far.

Could we still see Coulson again?

Maybe we’re delusional for continuing to have this particular belief, but we certainly do think that it’s possible that the writers could find a way to bring that character back again — it’s happened before and because of that, we’re not sure how there is ever a situation where you can rule this possibility out. Even if it doesn’t happen in the present, flashbacks always seem possible — heck, we’re seeing that in an extreme, computer-generated way for Captain Marvel, which features a far younger version of the Coulson character.

There is no doubt that we’ll miss Coulson, one of the best overall characters in the MCU and someone who really did stand out as a positive, inspirational hero figure. He was flawed, but he rose above his obstacles (and not having powers) to become as important a character as anyone.
