Agents of SHIELD season 6 trailer: Is Clark Gregg coming back?

The fine folks at ABC have just unveiled the latest Agents of SHIELD season 6 trailer, and it raises serious questions about Clark Gregg’s future. Are we going to see him stick around as a major part of the show? The video below makes it look possible, but not in the way that you would first assume.

At first, we watched the trailer wondering if Gregg’s role in the upcoming season was going to be limited to him appearing via hologram — almost where we could have an AI version of Coulson. (Yes, we know that this show does not have the best history with artificial intelligence.) From there, we wondered whether or not the team would find a way to revive the former SHIELD director — the start of the trailer does make it clear that Coulson is dead and that May was with him leading up to his demise.

Now, CarterMatt has all sorts of questions based on the tail end of this trailer, especially along the following lines: If Coulson is actually dead, how are we seeing him? Is Gregg’s character at the tail end of this actually Phil, or someone else entirely? It’s an interesting question and clearly something we’re meant to be discussing until the show comes back and actually gives us answers. After all, this character at the end of the trailer acts as though he’s never heard of Coulson at all and that is something that is certainly worth noting.

What are some possible theories here? With Captain Marvel coming out later this year it’s possible that we’re looking at a Skrull, or some other alien race is turning up. Or, maybe Coulson has been revived or reincarnated by someone and he has no recollection of his previous life. The part of this that is perhaps the most chilling is that this Phil apparently has not even heard of SHIELD at all.

The hardest part

Waiting. After all, it is still a long wait until the show is back on the air — think this summer. It’ll be out on the other side of Avengers: Endgame, which means that whatever happens with Thanos will be likely said and done at this point. This was a smart move for Agents of SHIELD in that it can circumvent most of the story within those movies and still tell whatever story it really needs to. That’s been one of the challenges with a lot of Marvel products over the past year — how to handle the clear cliffhanger following that movie.
