Supergirl season 4 exec teases Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor

There are a few different things worth looking forward to on Supergirl season 4 moving forward, but Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor is pretty high on the list. It was a somewhat shocking choice for the role when the casting news was first announced, but at the same time, we actually do think that this could work out rather well for the series if he delivers. The goal with any good villain is that they unsettle you, and we think that someone like Cryer will really set out to do that. Not only that, but he probably is motivated in part by all of the people who think that he wasn’t right for the part for one reason or another.

What we can say for certain is that the series’ executive producers are more than a little excited about him behind the scenes. In speaking on this further via Variety, here is what Jessica Queller had to say:

He’s powerful, he’s devious, he’s funny, he turns on a dime. His dynamic with Katie [McGrath, who plays his on-screen sister,] Lena, is just so great. We think the audience is going to go crazy when they see his performance.

We think there is something terrifying about a guy who can make you laugh, only to then cause unprecedented destruction. This is clearly something that the writers were going for. There’s a natural charisma that they want Lex to have where he may come across as good to people who don’t know him. This does make a certain degree of sense, after all. Just think of things in this sense — if you are a villain who comes across as constantly evil, then you’re not going to be able to make a whole lot of headway. You have to find a way to be sneaky, be calculated, and be able to know when to turn the switch on and off. Obviously, Lex wasn’t too successful given that he is in prison at the time in which we meet him on Supergirl. Yet, he was able to wreck a certain degree of habit before getting to that point and that is absolutely worth noting.
