Entering the episode tonight, our feeling was that of extreme nervousness. It felt clear that we would be losing either Catherine or Meredith’s father Thatcher, just based on the precarious positions that they were in. For Catherine, she was set to undergo a risky procedure that could alleviate some of her cancer, but there were all sorts of reasons in which things could go south. She was a fighter, but sometimes, there are only so many ways in which someone can fight.
If there is one thing that Catherine did have going for her within this episode, it’s the people who were working to ensure her safety. She had the best team around her possible led by Tom Koracick and Amelia, who have a great working relationship and also understood the stakes of the operation. They knew precisely what the dangers and the risks here really were.
Here’s the good news…
Allen is not leaving the show and Catherine is going to make it through — at least for now. The good news is that eventually, she can go back to being more or less her old self. The bad news, meanwhile, is that she still does have a small piece of the tumor. That’s something that is going to be with her for the remainder of her life, regardless of anything else that she goes through. We’re just glad that Allen will continue to be a part of the show on-camera — we do know that she is a director behind the scenes as well as an executive producer and someone essential for the show’s success behind the scenes.
