If you’ve been watching the series for some time, the name Thatcher may have slipped somewhere back into the recesses of your brain, and for good reason. Meredith’s father has not had a regular presence on the series for some time and, to go along with that, he is someone who doesn’t exactly have the best relationship in the world with her. The only reason why she knows about his ailing health is simply that she was told, and she then decides to pay him a visit because of that.
In the sneak peek below (if you cannot see it on the site, watch over here), you can see that there is still some hesitation on the part of Ellen Pompeo’s character in order to pay him a visit. She doesn’t forget about the history even if she recognizes that this is a different position than the two have been in over the past several years. Thatcher appears to be happy to see her, even if his health is failing. This is not going to be an easy discussion between the two, really no matter what the contents of it are. There are some skeletons that may be unearthed and some issues from the past that they are forced to tackle, more or less, head-on.
What we are left to wonder in the aftermath of whatever happens here is simply whether or not Meredith feels any better having seen him. We’re not invested anywhere near as much in Thatcher’s own journey, but we’re down for whatever gives her a little bit more of a sense of closure. She is likely entering this meeting assuming that this is one of the last times that she will ever see him alive. With that in mind, she has to approach it with that very thought in mind. We’ll see where the conversation goes when the episode airs on ABC Thursday night.
