How Lucifer season 4 could prove to be a hit for Netflix

Lucifer

We’re still in a holding pattern when it comes to Lucifer season 4 news, and that may last for a little while longer. Signs point to a premiere date at some point in the spring, but there’s no real rush for Netflix to announce anything — at least not yet. (Personally, we’d like to learn a premiere date at some point in February.)

For the sake of this article, though, what we want to look at is projected successes and whether or not this show can prove to be a big hit for a streaming provider. After all, we’re actually in fairly-uncharted waters when it comes to this show being on Netflix. We know that there is a diehard contingent of Lucifans ready and willing to watch the show immediately after it comes onto Netflix, but will some of the more casual viewers follow? Will it form a devoted streaming audience on the service?

The reason why this is such a unique situation for Netflix is simple — this is the first canceled show from a broadcast/cable network that they’ve saved in years. They did so on the assumption that many of those viewers would carry over, but there is no guarantee. It will take some promotion on their part, but we do think there is one thing that it will have going for it more than any new original series they launch: A devoted audience from the jump.

As we’ve discussed in the past, what Netflix looks for in renewing shows is an audience that is eager to watch the series right away — they want to see an instant demand, and they also want to see a high percentage of viewers who start a season and finish it. They’re eager to ensure that they continue to have success with a property for a good stretch of time in the future rather than just for a single year.

Lucifer’s greatest asset entering season 4 will be a diehard audience who watches right away, and from that its greatest challenge is likely going to be finding a way in which to find some other viewers on Netflix’s service. That’s going to be a job of the streaming provider, but hopefully they look at the show’s early success and that gives them an incentive to push a little bit more.
