How America’s Got talent: The Champions can correct its greatest flaw

America's Got Talent: The Champions

As of right now, America’s Got Talent: The Champions is getting super-close to wrapping up its first season on the air — and with that, we’re at a time in which it should really start looking at fixing some of its problems. That’s especially true if they want to ever find a way of doing this again.

What’s the biggest problem the show is facing at present? It’s rather simple: The voting system is terrible. For starters, the show really doesn’t need a Golden Buzzer in its current form. They only have two acts moving through per episode, so 50% of that is being assigned to just one judge. Meanwhile, the other 50% is being determined by a panel of “superfans” from every state, who we don’t actually know and who we haven’t heard from in any shape or form. We don’t doubt that these people are a part of the show, but the lack of transparency from this mysterious group makes their voting patterns and even their criteria rather mysterious. We don’t know why they vote for who they do or what qualifies them to be a super-fan.

So why didn’t NBC make this show live? We think that uncertainty in its success played a role, but scheduling may have also been a part of it. Simon Cowell is currently filming auditions for Britain’s Got Talent and it may not have worked for his schedule, though we do like to think that if they wanted this to happen badly enough, all parties could have figured this out. They should have.

How America’s Got Talent: The Champions should have worked

We understand that there is a limited window of weeks for the show, so here’s what we would’ve done — aired a performance show Monday and a results show on Tuesday and have four performance shows of 11 acts each instead of five pre-taped shows with ten. While this may stink for the six acts that are left out, 11 is probably the maximum of quality acts you can get per live show. NBC would be able to cut the results part out, which we see at the end of the pre-taped episodes, giving the lives shows a little more time for that extra act. We’d eliminate the Golden Buzzers altogether — we love the twist for the regular show, but since the judges and America already know the acts, it doesn’t have the same power here.

As for how the results would work in our version of AGT: The Champions, it’s pretty simple — America votes and five acts move on from each show. Then, you have two rounds of semifinals (two groups of ten) and then ten acts make it to the finale, with a possible wild-card thrown in there. You can schedule this out to where the season runs for about as long as this one is scheduled to, but you actually get more performances and a fairer voting system. This show has always been about the voice of the entire country, and that’s why it’s hard to feel anywhere near as good about the winner here.

Did we want an all-star version of the Got Talent franchise? Sure, but in these terms, it’s not entirely working.
