First and foremost, let’s discuss some of where the series has been as of late in terms of live numbers. (Note: The viewer figures that we’re talking about here do not include app / On-Demand viewership, and are only for the United States.) Overall, this season is averaging just over 1.04 million viewers an episode (down about 30% from the season 3 live average), but the series has been steadily on the rise as of late. This past episode was the most-watched of the season with 1.27 million watching live, and that with the show airing opposite the NFC Championship Game.

There are a number of factors that suggest that Outlander is gearing up for some of the best numbers of the season moving forward. For starters, there is no major competition tonight from either the NFL or a major awards show — there isn’t all that much that is going to stand in the series’ way. Momentum is also clearly on the show’s side, given that so much of the story has been gearing up for the situation that is unfolding at Shadow Lake.

Another curious factor here could be the weather — mostly in that with the midwest dealing with some terrible temperatures, there aren’t a lot of options other than staying indoors and watching TV. There’s a reason why January is often a good month for a number of shows, and it has to do with there being a large pool of possible viewers.

Our prediction

The Outlander finale is going to draw 1.3 million viewers, one more the best rating of the season. We think that the combination of positive momentum, a lack of competition, and also climate-related factors are going to help in order to push the show’s numbers over the top. That’s a great way to end the show as we move towards a season 5 — which isn’t going to be for some time still.

Remember, the vast majority of Outlander viewers do still watch the show via other means, so the total-viewer figure are going to be substantially higher once DVR and app viewership are counted (let along viewers in other countries).
