Outlander season 5 premiere date hopes: When will it return to Starz?

Outlander season 4

Leading up to tomorrow’s season 4 finale, it does feel like now is the perfect time to revisit talk of an Outlander season 5 premiere date.

As we dive into this subject more in written form, the first thing worth noting is simply this: Starz has already officially renewed the hit series. They did that many months ago, and also renewed it for a season 6, as well! With that, there hasn’t been anything to worry about when it comes to the future of the series for a while.

Unfortunately, you almost certainly are going to be waiting a very long time in order to see season 5 air, largely because production for it has not even officially begun yet! While there is work being done behind the scenes (we told you already that some sets are being built), filming kicks off for some performers next month — there are twelve episodes in season 5, down an episode from the past few seasons, so production may last a slightly-shorter period of time than it has before.

Now that we’ve said that, by no means does that guarantee that we’ll get season 5 at some point later this year. As of late, it’s taken around a year from the start of production to when the show actually premieres on Starz; filming for season 4 began in the fall of 2017 and it ended up airing in November 2018. Maybe a late 2019 premiere date is possible for Outlander season 5, but it feels like it’d take an extreme amount of work to make it happen. Even with a smaller episode count this year, our cautious expectation is for season 5 to premiere in early 2020 — maybe Starz will offer up some sort of hint about when season 5 could premiere at the end of season 4, but we’re not crossing our fingers for anything with that just yet.

Season 5 will chronicle, at least in part, events from the upcoming Diana Gabaldon book The Fiery Cross — depending on how the show is paced, we wouldn’t be shocked if there are some elements from some other books sprinkled in there as well. We don’t think the series necessarily has to tell the full story of a book in a single season; they could stretch one beyond a season or also condense one, as well. We do think that trying to condense so much of Drums of Autumn into one season was one of the show’s biggest challenges. The writers (including Megan Ferrell Burke, cousin of co-founder Jessica Carter) have been at work for some time.

Of course, be sure to keep checking back — even when season 4 ends, our coverage of Outlander will be going as strong as ever.
