In the video below from tomorrow’s episode, you can see Sister Francis doing her part in order to raise more awareness of measles, and also find people willing to be a part of a vaccination trial. She lists off some of the dangers that can come with measles — it’s really just about educating people. This is an era where medicine is advancing so fast and with that, there are so many more treatments that people need to be aware of. They’ve likely relied on so many random remedies in the past and what they don’t realize is that there are often better ways to deal with problems that will make their lives so much better. The issue is of course convincing people that some of these methods are safe — after all, this is a world where it’s not often easy to convince people of things!
We imagine that this is the sort of episode that will give us a great chance to actually get to know the Sister Francis character better, which is great given that she is so new still to the Nonnatus House world. We’re really only starting to get a good sense of who she is, why she values her job, and what she’s going to contribute to the world of Poplar. One of the things that we’ve come to know about this series over the years is that the creative team almost always finds ways to handle new arrivals as smartly as possible. It’s never about forcing too much of a single character on you right away; it’s a slow process getting to know them and that is absolutely intentional. It’s the best way to ensure that viewers get on board and you really get to know someone from top to bottom.
