Outlander season 4 finale: Sam Heughan talks Jamie’s mission, what’s ahead

The Outlander season 4 finale is airing in just a few days, and we definitely think that with all the different balls in the air that the tension is going to be high. Just think in terms of what’s on the line. Of course, trying to rescue Roger is going to be the focal point of the story for Jamie Fraser; yet, at the same time, he also has to focus on his own survival, as well as the survival of Young Ian and Claire.

Rest assured, there’s one thing that we’ve come to know about Jamie over time: This is a man who will do everything that he can in order to accomplish his task, even if it all feels impossible. As for what’s motivating this character in particular, Sam Heughan makes that clear to TVInsider in a new finale interview:

“He’s on a quest to win back her trust and love … He promised Bree he’ll save Roger. He can’t come back empty-handed.”

The connection between Jamie and Bree is clear — despite her being his daughter, they’ve also experienced similar trauma. He relates to her pain in a way few others do, and that is in part why he was so quick to attack Roger when he felt like he was responsible for her assault. He remembered the pain he felt at the hands of Black Jack Randall and in his own way, he wanted to make it easier on her — he was just misinformed before going there with Roger.

So what lies beyond this finale?

As Heughan notes, there is still something big bubbling underneath the surface in the American Revolution:

“They know this war is coming, bigger than anything. It is slowly thundering in the background.”

What we wonder at the moment is simply this: How much information Jamie and Claire will want to pass on about the possibility of war? They have foresight thanks to Claire, Brianna, and Roger (provided he survives) that nobody else has. Yet, the more people they tell about their time-traveling abilities, the more dangerous their lives will become. It really just comes down to trying to be prepared themselves … and side themselves with the right people before the time comes to ensure their safety. The deal for Fraser’s Ridge at the moment seems to complicate things.
