The Conners season 2: Could Johnny Galecki have a larger role?

The Conners

As we look towards a possible The Conners season 2 at ABC, there is a lot to look forward to when it comes to the future of Johnny Galecki.

What we know at the moment is that The Big Bang Theory is ending on CBS, and that was the big thing that kept Galecki from returning for more than just a few episodes as his old Roseanne character of David. It’s certainly possible he may want some time on is own after 12 years of doing a hit TV show (he certainly deserves a break!), but it definitely seems as though the interest is there for Johnny to come back.

Speaking on this particular subject, star / executive producer Sara Gilbert had the following to say to TVLine:

That’s something I’m very hopeful about. I know he loves doing the show. I love having him. We have a magical time together. I would anticipate that he would do some [episodes] but I don’t want to speak for him.

Gilbert also confirms in the piece that Juliette Lewis (who played David’s new love interest Blue) is not for-sure gone from the show following David’s decision to break up with her:

I would love to see her again. We haven’t gotten into creative [discussions about Season 2] because we aren’t officially picked up yet. But that is something we’ll explore. I’m a huge fan of Juliette Lewis and I like how Darlene judges her and then softens to her. I like the complicated dynamic between David and Darlene and she obviously adds [more] complications.

Ultimately, most creative decisions are ones that will be handled in the months to come — there is no immediate hurry, and we imagine that over the next few weeks, talks on a renewal will continue. It’s a little more complicated with this show because it is not following the same sort of typical contract structure that we’re used to seeing with some other network shows — there are no six or seven-year deals here, and negotiations with cast members are going to happen at different times. It does at least seem like everyone is eager to return and once that is finalized, we’ll probably hear about a renewal shortly after that. As we explained in a piece yesterday, the ratings alone for The Conners make it almost a lock to come back on the air.
